Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Test Facility

The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently inaugurated the Advanced Hypersonic Wind Tunnel test facility in Hyderabad. This is the first of its kind being launched in the country. India is the third country after United States and Russia to launch the facility.

E5 Series Shinkansen

The Japanese Embassy recently released the first glimpse of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The E5 Series Shinkansen trains are to be used to implement the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project. The project is to be completed by 2023. E5 Series Shinkansen are high speed Japanese trains.

RBI’s Second Cohort under Regulatory Sandbox

The Reserve Bank of India recently announced the second cohort under Regulatory Sandbox. It was announced under the theme of “Cross Border Payments”.

What is Regulatory Sandbox?

The Regulatory Sandbox refers to live testing of new products and services in a controlled environment. The companies can test their product viability without the need for a larger and more expensive rollout with the help of Regulatory Sandbox. It provides first and empirical evidence on the benefits and risks of emerging Technologies and their implications.

Money Transfer services, cybersecurity, financial inclusion and digital Know-Your Customers have been included. Other products such as crypto currency, credit registry and credit information have been excluded.

National Security Directive on Telecom Sector

The Cabinet Committee on Security recently announced the National Security Directive on Telecommunication sector. It will mandate service pr

oviders to purchase equipment from trusted sources. It has been framed in the perspective of national security. Under the provisions, the Government of India will declare a list of trusted sources and trusted products to be installed in the Telecom network of the country.

Indian Institute of Heritage

The Union Minister of Culture Shri Prahlad Singh Patel recently reviewed the proposal to set up Indian Institute of Heritage.

IND-INDO CORPAT

The 35th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy was held from 17 to 18 December 2020. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kulish, an indigenously built missile corvette and P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) participated with their Indonesian Naval counterparts. The Exercise is focused on preventing issues like Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, among others.

Jupiter- Saturn Great Astronomical Conjunction

On December 21, 2020 the world is to witness a rare celestial event, the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter.

Along with the conjunction of the planets, December 21 is the winter Solstice Day in the northern Hemisphere. It will be the longest night of the year. During Winter Solstice, the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. Also, during Winter solstice, North Pole is tilted farthest away from the sun. During this period, sun is directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Planetary Pressures-adjusted HDI

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently released the Human Development Report, 2020. India ranked 131 in the Human Development Index (HDI). Usually, the UNDP uses three major parameters to calculate the Human Development Index based on which the countries are ranked. They are Life Expectancy at birth, maternal mortality rate and political participation of women. This year, in 2020, for the first time the UNDP has introduced Planetary Pressures-adjusted HDI. However, it is an experimental metric and has not been yet adopted in calculating the HDI.
