WHO: For the first time commits to eliminate cervical cancer globally

During its closing day of 73rd World Health Assembly, on November 17, 2020, the World Health Organization released the “Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer”. The international organization aims to reduce more than 40% of new cases by 2050 by screening, vaccination and treatment.

Why did India not sign the world largest RCEP trade deal?

On November 15, 2020, China and other fourteen Asian countries signed the world largest trade pact under the RCEP of ASEAN grouping. The agreement left the doors open for India. However, in 2019, India walked out of the agreement.

What is mRNA Technology used in COVID-19 vaccines for the first time?

On November 16, 2020, Moderna, a US Biotech firm announced that its COVID-19 vaccines are 94.5% effective. The announcement comes in days after Pfizer released results showing 90% effectiveness in its own vaccine. Both the companies use mRNA technology in their vaccines. This is the first time the mRNA technology is being used to create vaccines.

COVAXIN of Bharat Biotech enters Phase III trials: Largest COVID-19 clinical trial of India

On November 16, 2020 the Bharat Biotech announced the commencement of Phase III trials of COVAXIN vaccines in India. The trials will involve 26,000 volunteers. It is to be held in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research. The trials are the largest clinical trials that is conducted for COVID-19 vaccine in the country.

WPI inflation at 1.48% in October 2020; Increased for third consecutive month

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) increased to 1.48% in October 2020. This was the highest in the past eight months.

Aryna Sabalenka wins Linz Title; replaces Serena Williams in top 10 ranking

On November 16, 2020, Aryna Sabalenka won the Linz Open. The 22-year old Belarusian traded places with Serena Williams who has dropped to 11th in ranking. Serena has not played since French Open due to her Achilles injury.

Japan and Australia to sign Defence Pact to counter China

On November 17, 2020, Japan and Australia are to sign the “Reciprocal Access Agreement” to counter the growing influence of China in the South China sea and in the Pacific Island Nations.

DIPAM and World Bank sign Agreement

On November 16, 2020, DIPAM (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) signed an agreement with World Bank. Under the agreement, the World Bank will provide advisory services on asset monetization.

November 17: National Epilepsy Day

Every year, the National Epilepsy Day is celebrated on November 17. The day is celebrated to create awareness about epilepsy.
